In 2001 Guy Lundy gave a speech entitled “I pledge allegiance”, which quickly turned into a viral email, being sent all over the world. The massive response to that speech led Guy to co-author the book “South Africa: Reasons to Believe”. Subsequently he co-produced the book, “South Africa 2014: The story of our future”, which incorporates the expert opinions of 77 prominent South Africans.
Guy's newest presentation is called "Crime and the Future." Crime in South Africa, particularly violent crime, poses a serious challenge to what we have worked so hard to achieve in our new democracy. Because of the personal nature of crime, highly publicised incidents lead to very emotional responses. Numbers can be used to show that incidents of crime are less than ten years ago, but people cannot be denied their anger about living in fear.
Guy draws on the wealth of knowledge he has gained in producing the books South Africa: Reasons to Believe and South Africa 2014: The Story of our future, as well as through his ongoing work as a futurist, strategist and writer, to present views on the issues around crime. He considers the emotions, the numbers, the perceptions and the realities of crime, and he considers how it might impact on the future.
By taking the emotion out of the debate, Guy is able to look optimistically at what is possible in the future, and at what each one of us can do to remove the scourge of crime from our communities.
