DESHUN DEYSEL IS BEST KNOWN as a member of the first and second South African Everest Expeditions. Although controversy and tragedy surrounded the first expedition in 1996, Deshun became a role model for what can be achieved if you are committed to your goals.
A dynamic speaker, Deshun has addressed audiences in South Africa, other parts of Africa and in the United States.
Deshun was a recipient of the prestigious FOYSA, Four Outstanding Young South Africans, award in 1997. She also received recognition as an “Outstanding Woman” in 1996 by the ANC’s Woman’s League.
In June 2003 Deshun made her second attempt to summit Mt. Everest. Unfortunately, due to dangerous climbing conditions, the onset of hazardous weather and poor visibility, the team had to make the difficult decision, only 400 metres from the summit, to turn back to the safety of base camp.
While Deshun has not yet reached the top of Mt. Everest, she bettered her first attempt by 1700m – by climbing to 8200m! A feat that only a handful of people from Africa can claim.
On 7 August 2007 Deshun summitted Mount Elbrus in Russia - the first mountain in her 7 Summits program!
